It is kind of strange. We`ve drunken mud-tasting water from the tiniest streams and ponds, milk directly from a farmers home, chicha (saliva-fermented corn beer) out of a dirty plastic mug and fruit juices from the street. We`ve eaten plenty of foods sold from small cartwheels and tables on the street and washed our own cooking pan in average every tree days (in case somebody is wondering, one doesn`t really taste the soup or stew remains from dinner in the porridge the next morning and visa versa). Some days we didn`t manage to wash our hands at all (after shaking many hands) and I am not sure how well the desinfectant gel works once you start wondering if the darkened skin colour on your hands comes from the sun or from all the dirt... And washing those luckily purchased tomatoes if there is only one liter of drinking water left? At some point you start setting priorities, and ours were definetely the tomatoes.
But did we get sick? NO!!!!
Then we come to a big city, hungry for all the restaurants and food we read about in the travel book and what happens: Anita gets sick after the first meal (3 hours after arriving in Cuzco) and ends up knocked out for over a day. So yesterday was mainly spent in bed sipping camomile tea and watching tv while Eirik did some research in town and worked on the blog.
But the good news is I`m much better today again and could enjoy the wonderful breakfast buffet in the morning. (Can you imagine how terrible that was yesterday? Fresh cut melon, papaya and banana, muesli, eggs, crisp bread and butter, fruit juices, tea and hot chocolate... and you are sick???)
Today we will go to the Inka museum and maybe visit some other sights as well, still taking it easy.
